Job Description:

The City is seeking a trustworthy, responsible individual who, under general direction, will perform technical building inspection to determine and enforce compliance with State and City laws, codes and ordinances in relation to structural building, plumbing, electrical, mechanical, and housing. Although new employees receive assistance on new or more difficult inspections, most work is performed independently with considerable use of technical judgment and discretion.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

• Performs site inspections of the building, alteration and repair of single-family and duplex structures during the course of construction, as required;

• Determines compliance with state and city building laws, codes and ordinances, fire and safety restrictions, building codes and energy codes;

• Meets with contractors, developers and property owners to explain and interpret laws;

• Assists with compliance; performs site re-inspections and follow ups;

• Issues deficiency write-ups and violation notices;

• Reviews blueprints and building plans in the course of inspections;

• Issues building permits;

• Reviews, researches and evaluates existing codes and regulations;

• Advises contractors and homeowners of building code requirements;

• Collects and analyzes data for departmental reports;

• Prepares and maintains various departmental records;

• Answers telephone inquiries;

• Performs other related duties as required.

OTHER JOB FUNCTIONS:

• Assists the City in the preparation and aftermath of a major emergency such as a hurricane or other storm or disaster, as needed Working Hours – Monday through Friday 7:30 am to 4:30 pm Salary Range – $17.99 - $27.41/hr ($37,412.07 - $57,010.10/yr); EXCELLENT benefits

Applicants should expect a starting salary of $17.99/hr. Only applicants with the most job-related qualifications will be selected for interview and further consideration. Qualifications:

REQUIREMENTS: Knowledge, Abilities and Skills – Thorough knowledge of the materials and methods used in general building construction, alteration and repair and the building, electrical, plumbing and mechanical trades; knowledge of State and local building codes, laws and ordinances; knowledge of the legal procedures involved in building inspection.

Ability to read and interpret building construction plans/blueprints and specifications; significant ability to meet and work with contractors, developers, property owners; ability to maintain accurate records; ability to express oneself clearly and concisely in verbal and written form; ability to assemble, organize and analyze data and compose written and oral reports; ability to drive a vehicle; ability to remain at a city work shelter, before, during and after a hurricane or other storm or disaster, if asked Minimum

Qualifications – High School Diploma or recognized equivalent; valid Florida Driver's License with an acceptable driving record. Must possess a Standard or Provisional Certificate as a 1 and 2 Family Dwelling Inspector; or Standard or Provisional Certificates in each category as a Building, Electrical, Plumbing, and Mechanical Inspector. Applicants who hold Provisional Certifications must successfully complete certification exam(s) within one (1) year of hire date.

 

Physical Demands:

Some physical effort is used in this position. Requires frequent walking, standing, climbing, stooping, reaching, bending; good finger/hand dexterity and hand/eye coordination; good eyesight, hearing and speech; working in adverse environmental conditions periodically; regular driving of vehicle.
