JOB SUMMARY

Candidates who have already attended or are currently attending a Florida law enforcement academy may apply. This is a non-paid position. The ideal candidate possesses related work experience, college, and/or military experience. A strong candidate has favorable work history, driving history, credit ratings, and a low incident rate of substance abuse.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS & ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Must meet the education/employment requirements of Option 1 or Option 2
    • Option 1: Two years of accredited college (60 credit hours); OR Two years of active military duty or four continuous years of reserve/guard duty; OR Two years of full-time law enforcement or related experience (e.g., corrections, emergency communications, fire/rescue, security); OR A combination of the above.
    • Option 2 - Three or more years of current, discipline free employment.
  • High school or GED diploma
  • Must be able to comprehend and communicate fluently in verbal and written English.
  • At least 21 years of age
  • U.S. Citizen
  • Valid drivers license for the last year and have no more than two moving violations over the past three years. Other driving history will be evaluated on a case by case basis
  • No DUI convictions for the past 5 years. Other driving history will be evaluated on a case by case basis
  • Must not have been convicted of a felony
  • Must not have been convicted of a misdemeanor involving moral character, false statements, perjury or domestic violence
  • Must not have received a dishonorable discharge from the United States Armed Forces
  • No illegal drug usage over the past three years. Other drug usage will be evaluated on a case by case basis
  • Good physical condition
  • Vision of 20/40 corrected or better
  • Applicants with body ornamentation (tattoos) shall not have any visible body ornamentation on the head, face, and neck area, which includes the visible skin while wearing a collared uniform shirt with an unbuttoned top button. Employees shall not have any visible body ornamentation located on the hands which is defined as the area from wrist to fingertips; however, a tattoo simulating a wedding ring on the ring finger of the left hand will not be considered excessive as described herein. PROCESSING & TRAINING

Sworn Positions/Deputy Sheriff Deputy Sheriffs are responsible for the protection of life and property and the enforcement of laws and regulations. This work involves an element of personal danger and frequent contact with the public during routine and emergency situations.

Must have the ability to perform physical activities such as; lifting, bending and pulling. Must be able to meet and to perform the same physical/mental requirements as set forth in the Deputy Sheriff job description. The employee must regularly stand; sit; walk; talk or hear; taste or smell; use hands to handle or feel; reach with hands and arms; and climb or balance. The employee must occasionally stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move between 25 100 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. Must have the ability to pursue, apprehend and arrest law violators and enforce county ordinances, traffic and criminal laws of the state of Florida.

The employee will frequently be exposed to all types of outdoor weather conditions. The employee will occasionally be exposed to wet/humid conditions (non-weather related), vibration, risk of radiation, work with explosives, work near moving mechanical parts and work in high, precarious places. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. May also be exposed to other working conditions as outlined in the Deputy Sheriff job description.
