IT Specialist I


GENERAL DESCRIPTION:  Monitor, maintain, and support the Agency’s local areas network (LAN), wide area network (WAN), and Internet system.  Maintain network hardware and software.  Monitor system functioning to ensure network availability to all users and perform necessary maintenance to support network availability.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  1. Maintain and administer computer networks and related computing environments including computer hardware, systems software, applications software, and all configurations.
  2. Assist with planning, coordinating, and implementing network security measures to protect data, software, and hardware.
  3. Configure and test computer hardware, networking software and operating system software. Diagnose and solve hardware and software issues.  Perform minor repairs to hardware, software, or peripheral equipment.
  4. Assists with development and writing of IT procedures to cover network monitoring and support.
  5. Monitor network performance to determine whether adjustments need to be made, and to determine where changes will need to be made in the future.  Perform routine network start-up and shutdown procedures and maintain control records.
  6. Maintains the Agency’s scanning and fax server systems.  Setup of users and completing work order requests on the systems.  Perform data backups following Agency procedures.  Assists with disaster recovery operations.
  7. Ensures assigned IT work orders are completed in a timely manner.  Communicates progress back to Director.  Answers user inquiries regarding computer software or hardware operation to solve problems.  Completes IT inventory transfer and disposal paperwork according to Agency procedures.  Stays abreast of advances in technology.

 MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge of the structure and content of the English language including the meaning and spelling of words, rules of composition, and grammar.
  • Knowledge of circuit boards, processors, chips, electronic equipment, and computer hardware and software, including applications and programming.  Ability to gain knowledge in transmission, broadcasting, switching, control, and operation of telecommunications systems as it relates to the integration of fax machines, copiers, and printers.
  • Ability to gain knowledge of Agency terminology, goals, and objectives.
  • Ability to demonstrate skill in troubleshooting and repairing a variety of computer hardware and software.
  • Ability to demonstrate skill in skill in critical thinking.  Using logic and reasoning to identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions to problems.  Ability to provide excellent customer service to Agency standards.
  • Ability to work under pressure as well as organize and plan efficiently.  Ability to demonstrate skill in time management and to meet deadlines.  Ability to manage multiple tasks and stay focused in a variety of areas at the same time.
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision.  Ability to see details at a close range when working with equipment.
  • Ability to demonstrate auditory, verbal, and visual capabilities to adequately communicate via phone, in person, and in writing.   
  • Ability to operate a personal computer.  Knowledge and proficiency in of all Microsoft Office applications including project management software.  Ability to navigate the Internet.
  • Ability to work and communicate with people from various multi-cultural backgrounds and socio- economic levels.
  • Sensitivity to the needs, abilities, beliefs, and attitudes of individuals within and outside the Agency, including but not limited to clients and co-workers.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Graduation from an accredited four year college or university with a Bachelor’s Degree in Information Technology or related field.  Three (3) years experience maintaining, analyzing, troubleshooting, and repairing computer systems, hardware, and computer peripherals.  Three (3) years experience with local area and wide area networks.  Microsoft Certified Technology Specialist (MCTS) certification required.  Microsoft Certified System Engineer (MCSE) certification preferred.  Microsoft Certified IT Professional (MCITP) preferred.

(A comparable amount of training, education or experience may be substituted for the above minimum qualifications).

Salary Range:   $40,133                                                                                                       
Pay Grade:  IT-9
