CLASSIFICATION: Captain – Communications

POSITION SUMMARY:
Supervises and coordinates activities of personnel assigned to the 911 communications division, leads and trains employees, assists in the development of policies and procedures related to the communications division.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
- Must have and maintain a Florida 911 Emergency Dispatcher (FL 911 Telecommunicator) certification.
- Must have and maintain IAED Fire QC Certification
- Must have and maintain IAED Medical QC Certification
- Must have a two (2) year college degree, from an accredited College or University.
- Must have five (5) years’ Emergency Services Dispatch Experience.
- Must obtain and maintain Emergency Number Professional (ENP) certification within one (1) year of promotion as a condition of continued employment.
COMPETENCY:
- Knowledge of applicable Federal, State, and Local laws, codes and regulations
- Strong verbal, written and interpersonal skills.
- Demonstrated proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and applicable specialty software.
- Skilled in prioritizing and assessing work
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Works as an intermediate supervisor by assisting the Communications Supervisor in the operations of the Communications Center while performing dispatching duties.
- Plans, directs and supervises communicators when the Communications Supervisor is not available or present.
- Adjusts errors and complaints within the Communications Center.
- Make decisions on the movement of equipment to provide adequate coverage for fire and EMS protection throughout the District.
- Makes decisions on the appropriate response to unusual alarms.
- Reports equipment and infrastructure malfunctions and problems to the proper staff officer or company.
- Ensures necessary staff and support notifications are made in a timely manner.
- Prepare composite reports for various Departmental activities and statistics.
- Ensures attendance information is passed on the Supervisor of Communications for logging into the appropriate payroll system.
- Ensures adequate staffing is provided in the Communications Center as a result of sick calls and vacations.
- Evaluates performance and assists in developing personal development plans for assigned Communications Center personnel.
- Issues discipline as necessary.
- Makes recommendations for policy modifications.
- Performs in-service training of new personnel.
- Directly supervises employees in the 911 Communications Division. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organizations policies and applicable laws.
- Responsibilities include interviewing, coaching, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.
- Other duties as assigned.

DRIVING REQUIREMENTS:
Must possess a valid Florida State Driver's license and maintain eligibility under the District's commercial vehicle program.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
- While performing the duties of this job, an employee is regularly required to sit, stand, walk, touch, speak, hear, and see. An employee is occasionally required to bend, kneel, reach, twist, carry, climb, push and pull.
- An employee must lift and/or move small articles and occasionally lift objects up to 20 pounds.
- An employee must demonstrate fine motor skills and to be able to operate vehicles and other equipment.
- An employee is occasionally required to work in heat, cold and wet/damp conditions and to navigate uneven and/or outdoor terrain.
- Certain positions may require work above ground or in enclosed spaces.
- Certain positions may have requirements of 50 pounds maximum lifting with frequent lift/carry up to 25 pounds.
- Positions requiring strength demands in the Heavy and/or Very Heavy category have detailed physical performance analyses available for review.
PAY: Pay ranges between $1,093 and $1,468 per week. Position is currently within our B-Unit CBA.
