Performs work in maintaining and repairing sidewalks, tree trimming, street repairs, concrete work and other public service projects. Works in the repair and construction of underground utilities, appurtenances and utility projects.  Work is performed under general supervision.

This position is non-exempt. Fair Labor Standards Act overtime provisions will apply.

These job functions are not to be construed as a complete statement of all duties performed.  Employees may be assigned additional duties by management as deemed necessary.

  • Participates in the tasks and work of construction crew engaged in the repair, rework, and maintenance of the sidewalks and roadways and maintenance of trees in city right of way.
  • Removes broken and cracked concrete.  Forms, grades, pours and finishes concrete; strips forms cuts and removes damaged asphalt, levels ground with rock and replaces with asphalt.
  • Operates heavy equipment involved in daily task of repairs, maintenance, excavation, hauling materials, installing new pipe, fill, grade, gravel, and sod installation/maintenance at various locations throughout the City.
  • Operates light to heavy equipment depending on tasks assigned, including but not limited to excavator, wheel loader, crane, Ariel trucks and dump truck. Operates hand and power tools.
  • Maintains a home or personal telephone ensuring accessibility and will be placed on call out list
  • Follows department methods, operating rules and equipment of construction and maintenance of sidewalks and roadways.
  • Maintains awareness of occupational hazards and promotes and enforces safety precautions in the work place.
  • Responds to inquiries, requests for assistance, concerns and complaints in areas of responsibility, and maintains an effective relationship with the public.
  • Communicates effectively both verbally and in writing, and reads and interprets constructions plans.
  • Will be placed on call once probation is complete

An equivalent combination of higher education and experience may be considered, provided that the education and experience is in a relevant and related field.

  • High school diploma or GED
  • At least two (2) years of experience in a related field.

Licenses, Certifications, and/or Registrations:

  • Valid Florida Driver's License
  • Obtain a Class "B" Commercial Florida Driver's Permit within three (3) months from date of employment, and obtain a Class "B" Commercial Florida Driver's License within six (6) months from date of employment
  • Certified in Traffic Control and Safety in the work area

Conducts manual work; continual light work and occasional heavy work.  Requires frequent walking and standing, climbing, stooping, reaching, bending, good finger/hand dexterity and hand/eye coordination, good eyesight, hearing and speech, and regular driving of vehicle.  Moderate lifting and carrying (45 pounds).

Environmental Conditions

Works outside in all weather conditions for long periods of time and exposure to construction and water/wastewater site hazards, traffic, and moving machinery during daily work.
