CLASSIFICATION:      Biologist IV – Mosquito Programs Coordinator

HOURS:                       40 Hours Per Week

POSITION SUMMARY:  

Perform functions to coordinate, organize and supervise the RCID Mosquito and Sentinel Chicken programs, guided by precedent and working within the limits of established policies.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:      

  • Bachelor’s degree in Entomology, Biology, Environmental Science or related field.
  • Public Health Pest Management certification (must be obtained within 6 months of hire, as a condition of continued employment).
  • FDACS Public Health Director certification (must be obtained within 6 months of hire, as a condition of continued employment, per 5E-13.032 FAC).
  • Three to five years of experience in mosquito surveillance or similar field required.

COMPETENCY:

  • Knowledge of basic computer use and specific computer software required.
  • Proficient in mosquito identification and classification.
  • Ability to compile, analyze and maintain operating records and prepare definitive reports.
  • Ability to effectively manage and oversee department section. 
  • Knowledge of animal phlebotomy required.

RESPONSIBILITIES:          

  • Direct all activities of the Mosquito and Sentinel Chicken programs through required protocols and procedures of field and office work.
  • Setup and retrieve mosquito traps. Count, identify through microscope, and pool mosquitos.
  • Maintain Sentinel Chicken Program. Feed and water chicken flocks. Perform phlebotomy on chickens and prepare samples for analysis
  • Perform maintenance on equipment as required.
  • Prepare reports for landowner Pest Management and the District.
  • Coordinate activities with landowner Pest Management to provide guidance for adulticide, larvacide and surveillance programs.
  • Submit requisitions for chemicals, equipment and supplies.
  • Monitor budget and submit annual budget report.
  • Prepare and deliver presentations on mosquito control and surveillance.
  • Train and assign department team members. Provide technological oversight, direction and mentoring, develop and communicate performance metrics to assess the effectiveness of team, both as a department and individually. Evaluate performance and provide counseling, cross training and coaching to employees. Maintain harmonious team/employer relations.
  • Perform or assist with any operations, as required to maintain workflow and to meet schedules and quality requirements.
  • Participate in any variety of meetings and work groups to integrate activities, communicate issues, obtain approvals, resolve problems and maintain specified level of knowledge pertaining to new developments, requirements, and policies.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
  • Regular, dependable attendance required.

While engaging in the duties of this position the Employee performs lifting and/or carrying of up to 50 lbs. frequently and 10 occasionally. Employee sits frequently. Employee stands/walks on varied surfaces, bends/stoops/crouches, pushes/pulls, climbs/balances and kneels occasionally. Employee uses their hand(s)/arm(s) to reach in any direction and seize, grasp, hold and turn object using hand(s). Employee uses fingers, versus whole hand, to pick, pinch and feel objects. Employee sees, talk and hear. Employee Visual functions include the ability to identify and distinguish colors and requires adjustment of lens of the eye to bring an object into sharp focus.


Employee will operate motor vehicle(s) that involve the use of hand/foot controls.

PAY:      Wage ranges between $1088 and $1451 per week. Up to 34 paid days off annually, FRS pension, great medical, fitness center access, perks and more.
