The Orange County Corrections Department (OCCD) operates the 3rd largest jail system in the State of Florida with more than 1,500 employees including over 1,000 certified corrections officers. It serves and protects the citizens of Orange County by providing for the care, custody, and control of legally incarcerated inmates in a safe and secure environment, and provides services for those individuals supervised in community programs.

The Security Support and Security Operations Divisions are responsible for the safety and security of all personnel, volunteers and visitors, as well as inmates in the custody of OCCD. These divisions are comprised primarily of certified personnel who work in partnership with health professionals, civilians, as well as local law enforcement and other divisions. Correctional Officers are assigned to A and B squads here at OCCD. The squads cover various shifts, which staff the 24-hour operation. Within these squads, an officer is assigned to a specific post. Within the Security Support and Security Operations Divisions are specialty units and teams for officers who qualify.

This position is responsible for ensuring the health, safety and secure confinement of inmates in the County correctional facilities.

Representative Duties


  • Supervises inmates to prevent altercations, intimidation undesirable or illegal acts, intercedes when necessary, and to ensure the safety of the facility, other Correctional staff and the inmates. Maintains accurate count and current location of all inmates or Youthful Offenders assigned. Completes and maintains required records, logs and reports. Performs cell and body searches as required. Ensures safe, secure and orderly movement of inmates throughout the facility. Performs security and safety checks and adheres to facility security procedures.
  • Ensures, to the limit of authority possible, that inmate rights are observed-and that they are treated according to policy. Supervises inmate or Youthful Offender work crews. Acquires knowledge of all emergency plans and procedures and maintains emergency equipment.

Minimum Qualifications


High school graduate or equivalent.

Must be at least 19 years of age and a United States citizen. Must not have been convicted of a felony or a misdemeanor involving moral turpitude. Must possess Florida certification as a correctional officer according to Florida Statute 943.13. Applicants who obtained their certification after 7/l/93 must also provide results of Florida Officer Certification examination indicating achievement of mastery level.

Must be able to work all shifts, weekends and holidays. Must possess and maintain a valid Florida Drivers License.

Shift may vary depending on area of assignment.

Notes


All applicants will be required to participate in a Physical Abilities Test (PAT). The minimum fitness standards that candidates are required to successfully perform are listed below:

  • Push-ups: Complete at least 15 push-ups in one minute.
  • Sit-ups: Complete at least 25 sit-ups in one minute.
  • 1.5 Mile Run: Complete a 1.5 mile run in 18 minutes or less.

Starting Salary $18.05/hour to $29.60/hour, based on contract
