The Rollins College Maintenance Team is seeking a skilled and service-oriented HVAC Mechanic to join their team.

Primary Job Responsibilities:

  • Conducting routine maintenance on chillers and cooling towers, and the ability to diagnose and address issues.
  • Installing, inspecting, troubleshooting, and repairing commercial HVACR equipment such as rooftop units, split systems, boilers, walk in coolers, and chillers.
  • Installing, maintaining, and repairing of control systems, motors, and contactors.
  • Performing routine maintenance of A/C and heating unit systems including filter replacement, drain pan, and coil cleaning.
  • Working with control voltages and wiring methods, and ability to diagnose issues.
  • Participating in meetings, workshops and training to gather and convey information required to perform job functions.
  • Preparing written reports (work order status, activity logs, etc.) for documenting activities and/or conveying information.
  • Performing other relevant departmental duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Requires minimum eight (8) years of job related experience; including recent large chiller experience, including York and Trane 500 ton chillers.
  • Must be licensed by the appropriate city, state or local governmental entities
  • CFC recovery license or ability to obtain one.
  • Requires a valid Florida driver’s license and satisfactory MVR to operate college vehicles.
  • Ability to troubleshoot and repair commercial HVACR equipment such as rooftop units, split systems, boilers, walk in coolers, and chillers without supervision.
  • Ability to diagnose and troubleshoot gas fired boilers.
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints and schematics.
  • Knowledge of refrigeration equipment (walk in coolers, ice machines).
  • Knowledge or experience with district chilled water loops.
  • Knowledge of tools, techniques and procedures of miscellaneous plumbing, HVAC, electrical, repairs and installation.
  • Knowledge of local city ordinances and codes, and OSHA workplace safety standards.
  • Knowledge involving single and three phase voltages from 120-480 volts.
  • Use of ladders and man lifts while wearing a safety harness will be required.
  • Ability to interpret and follow verbal and written instructions and diagrams.
  • Ability to wear or use proper safety and PPE equipment.
  • Ability to work as a team or independently.
  • Exhibits sound judgment and the ability to make reasonable decisions in the absence of direction.
  • Demonstrates cross-cultural awareness and communication skills to maximize effective collaboration across diverse groups on-campus.
  • Physical role requiring heavy lifting, pushing, pulling, bending twisting, and kneeling.

Preferred Qualifications:

Additional business, technical or college training.

Advanced or specialized training in HVAC, plumbing, or electrical.

Ability to use computers for research, warranty, data storage, diagnostic, and programming needs.

FLSA Status: Non-Exempt

Work Schedule:

The HVAC Mechanic is scheduled to work 7.5 hours/day, 37.5 hours per week. The schedule for this role is:

  • Monday - Friday, 7:00am to 3:00pm (with a 1 hour paid lunch)

Maintenance positions will be required to carry on call phone 2-3 times per year for periods of 7 days. This includes working a Saturday from 7-3pm with the following Friday off if desired, some major Holiday weekends may not be required.

As a condition of employment in this position, the incumbent will be subject to call in outside of regular hours in order to respond to emergencies, including the preparation and maintenance of College facilities, grounds, systems and services during inclement weather crises.

*Works overtime, special events and weekends may be required as needed.

Work Environment:

  • Works on-campus at multiple work sites including indoors and outdoors.
  • Work requires physical exertion and exposure to both hot and cold weather.
  • Physical ability to handle, lift and/or carry heavy objects and equipment.
  • Must be punctual and reliable; daily attendance is required.
