Job Description:
Located in Arecibo, Puerto Rico, this position provides support to the software engineer program by improving scientific analysis pipelines, scripts, and data flows. Supports the implementation of a new cloud-based data management storage system at the Arecibo Observatory. Performs cataloging and indexing of data archives, and supports new data uploads into the platform.
Other primary job responsibilities include:
- Develop new software, incorporating the use of artificial intelligence techniques to accelerate data processing and analysis. Perform all required testing and maintenance associated with the tool.
- Optimize existing scientific analysis pipelines. Improve existing scripts, identify areas of software improvement, and provide solutions to optimize performance and efficiency.
- Design, develop, and implement database systems based on customer requirements. Optimize existing database systems for performance efficiency. Lead database design and architecture to support application development projects. Prepare design specifications, functional documentation, and testing for assigned projects.
- Creating and maintaining web-based tools for locating, retrieving, and manipulating archival data.
- Lead implementation of new software/systems at the facility. Create complex functions, scripts, stored procedures, and triggers to support application development.
- Manage all aspects of the assigned projects, including the development of a structured project management plan, coordination with stakeholders, and monitoring of project performance.
- Lead implementation of a data migration strategy for obsolescent storage media.
- Independently develop/deploy updates to facility web pages.
- Implement new technology initiatives across the site, including data management, networking, web development.
- Other duties as assigned.

Monday – Friday; 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM. The schedule may vary as required.

Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelor's or Master's degree and 2+ years of relevant experience.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Systems / Software Engineering/Information Technology or related field.
- The preferred candidate should have 3-5 years of experience in programming with high-level scripting languages in Linux/Unix environment, database and web programming, and programming cloud-based applications.
- Experience building and deploying infrastructure with cloud deployment technologies.
- Experience in business intelligence, analytics, data science, and data products.
- Project management experience a plus.
- Experience designing interactive applications.
- Excellent communication skills.
- Demonstrated problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
- Solid knowledge of object-oriented programming and design.
- Experience with multithreading, real-time systems, and socket programming.
- Capable of delivering on multiple competing priorities with little supervision.
