DISTRIBUTION AND COLLECTION/EQUIPMENT OPERATOR III

FULL TIME TERM TO PERM

Candidates will be staffed through Ad-Vance Talent Solutions, a business partner of Polk County, during the probationary period before transition to County employment.

MAJOR FUNCTION

Advanced operations and maintenance of potable water distribution system and sewer collection systems. Perform minor maintenance to work unit equipment at least 50% of the work effort.

ILLUSTRATIVE DUTIES

Primary operation and maintenance of equipment assigned to the work unit. Duties include the performance of manual labor tasks as well as operation and maintenance of one or more of the following pieces of equipment listed below to perform maintenance of potable drinking water distribution system and sewer collection systems.

Operates mowing equipment and other smaller equipment assigned to the work unit. Washes, cleans and performs routine maintenance on equipment. May act as lead worker when assigned. Performs related duties as required on water, sewer and reuse systems.

KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES AND SKILLS

Knowledge of the operation, maintenance, and use of assigned equipment. Knowledge of traffic laws and other regulations governing the operation of equipment assigned. Knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions in the operation of equipment. Ability to understand and follow oral and written instruction. Ability to make routine maintenance checks and emergency repairs on equipment assigned.

Ability to see, hear sounds at a normal level, drive from work site to work site, bend, stoop, sit and stand. Ability to perform tasks that require eye and hand coordination. Ability to operate multi-hand and/or foot controls. Must be able to lift, carry and move materials, and interact with job related appurtenances and equipment weighing more than forty-five (45) pounds. Ability to work in all weather and environmental conditions.

Cleaning, swabbing and air purging existing water mains, installing, tapping, repairing/replacing, pressure testing or disinfecting water main and appurtenances (including fittings, valves, and hydrants) operating or adjusting control valves as necessary to regulate water distribution system flows or pressures.  Evaluating and interpreting water quality measurements in water distribution systems and troubleshooting to determine causes of water quality complaints.

Flushing water mains; installing or repairing/replacing water service lines and appurtenances (including fittings, valves and meters) test and maintaining meters; locating and marking meter mains or service lines. Operating or exercising isolation valves or water, sewer and reuse systems. Testing and maintaining fire hydrants, repairing/overhauling control valves and hydrants. Performing water quality measurements in water distribution systems; reading blueprints and updating GIS information.

 MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Graduate of an accredited high school or possess an acceptable equivalency diploma and have a minimum of two (2) years of experience in the operation and routine maintenance of the primary piece of equipment assigned by the work unit.

Must have appropriate Water Distribution License or obtain the license within (24) months of hire date. Rule 62-699 by the FDEP.

Must possess a valid Florida Class ‘A’ Commercial Driver’s License with Air Brakes and Tanker endorsements at the time of application.

Must have a home telephone as employee is subject to call out which may include after-hours duty to assist in emergencies.

A comparable amount of related training and experience may be substituted for the minimum qualifications with the exception of the required licensure.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENT

This position may be required to report for work when a declaration of emergency has been declared in Polk County.
