Licensed Medical Lab Scientist III- Lab-Nights

 

Position Summary

Located in Ocoee about 11 miles west of the downtown Orlando Health campus, the 212-bed Orlando Health – Health Central Hospital provides comprehensive medical and surgical acute care for the families of west Orange County communities. The hospital has earned Spine Surgery, Joint Replacement and Primary Stroke certification from The Joint Commission. Also located on the expanded Orlando Health – Health Central campus is a 30,000-square-foot comprehensive cancer center with clinical programs and services for patients and families. The cancer center became the only facility in Central Florida, and only the sixth in the nation, to offer MRIdian® therapy, which allows for more precise treatment of cancer tumors through real-time magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) during radiation beam therapy. The Orlando Health Center for Rehabilitation, which includes a 60-bed rehabilitation unit, a 40-bed Alzheimer's unit, a 10-bed hospice unit and outpatient rehabilitation services, also is located at the Orlando Health – Health Central campus. The hospital also provides services at the Orlando Health Emergency Room and Medical Pavilion – Horizon West in nearby Winter Garden

The Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) III evaluates, assist in the interpreting of results, and analyzes blood and body fluids using both automated and complex manual methods following established policies and procedures to ensure the highest quality of laboratory results within established timeframes.


Responsibilities

Essential Functions
 Evaluates specimens for quality and preanalytical errors
 Verifies results and quality control data for accuracy and reliability.
 Performs, evaluates, and documents all quality control, preventive maintenance and troubleshooting procedures.
 Provides guidance and direction to other team members with less experience. Only receives guidance for most complex procedures.
 Works independently within broad guidelines, rather than prescribed procedures.
 Able to assist with troubleshooting problems and recommending possible solutions.
 Explains difficult or sensitive information in a manner that is easy to understand.
 Performs high complexity testing.
 Verify instrument performance standards including linearity, reportable range and method comparisons
 Demonstrates computer system proficiency including ordering, resulting, and inquiry functions.
 Ensures proper utilization and preparation of reagents and supplies.
 Assists with inventory management
 Communicates critical results to the patient caregiver.

Other Related Functions
 Performs specimen collection procedures, specimen receiving and processing as required.
 Answers the telephone and greets guests to the department.
 Maintains current job knowledge in order to effectively instruct students or other personnel.
 Responsible for an active role in the laboratory quality improvement program.
 Follows the established policies and procedures to meet regulatory and accrediting agency requirements.
 Practices infection control and safety practices and keeps a clean and organized work area.
 Maintains confidentiality of patient record, hospital and departmental matters at all times.


Qualifications

Education/Training
 Bachelor's degree required.
 Successful completion of an approved clinical laboratory training internship.

Licensure/Certification
 Maintains current Florida license as a Medical Technologist certified in the specialty or specialties required by the laboratory section(s) assigned.
 National Certification such as American Society of Clinical Pathology (ASCP), American Association of Bioanalysts (AAB), or American Medical Technologists (AMT) preferred.
Experience
Two (2) years experience required. Based on area of assignment department specific competencies may be required.
