Physician Assistant (Pool) - Jewett Orthopedic Institute - Downtown Complex
Position Summary
Orlando Health Jewett Orthopedic Institute is one of the region's largest orthopedic and sports medicine practices, providing comprehensive care for more than 250,000 patients each year. This August, the institute will open Florida's first dedicated orthopedic hospital, featuring 75 private inpatient rooms, 10 operating suites with four virtually connected suites that can be used to train surgeons around the world, and a state-of-the-art research and innovation center with a 10-station bio skills lab and 3D printer. In March, a new medical pavilion opened adjacent to the hospital and houses outpatient clinics, an imaging suite, physical therapy spaces and the largest orthopedic ambulatory surgery center in Florida. Practice medicine under the direction of physicians and/or surgeons that helps with all aspects of patient care, including diagnosis, treatments, and consultations.

Responsibilities
Essential Functions
- Assists in providing care for patients receiving radiation treatments; writes appropriate orders, including those for perioperative orders, narcotics, stimulants, and depressant drugs.
- Performs emergency life-saving procedures in cases such cardiac arrest, respiratory arrest, massive hemorrhage, or similar catastrophe.
- Performs daily rounds independently or with attending physicians and/or students. Daily tasks to include:
- Perform detailed H & P examinations and document inpatient H & P, and discharge summaries in the medical record. (Must be reviewed and countersigned by supervising medical staff member within 24 hours and may not be substituted
for physician H & P). - Initiate appropriate actions to facilitate implementation of therapeutic plans, consistent with healthcare needs of the patient
- Performs examination for follow-ups and patients receiving radiation treatments.
- Review medical records of patients of the supervising medical staff member.
- Routine patient rounds to monitor and evaluate clinical status; change in status to be reported to supervising medical staff member for management (may not be substituted for physician rounds).
- Notifies attending physician about unusual or unexpected events or problems requiring direct physician consultation.
- Dispense/prescribe medication, as authorized by supervising medical staff member.
- Issue oral and written orders on behalf of the supervising medical staff member, to be reviewed and countersigned by the supervising medical staff member within 24 hours.
- Write or dictate reports and progress notes appropriately in the medical record
- Scrub with supervising surgeon in operating room.
- Remove catheters, drains, sutures, and staples.
- Surgically close wounds, incision and drainage, debridement, dressing (the surgeon must remain in the immediate area).
- Assist physician with special diagnostic procedures and follows the medical staff policies on supervision for the procedure
- Perform advanced cardiac life support. In a medical emergency, the Physician Assistant will act on behalf of the supervising medical staff member to maintain life support until a licensed physician arrives to manage the patient.
- Perform patient education.

- Maintains reasonably regular, punctual attendance consistent with Orlando Health policies, the ADA, FMLA and other federal, state and local standards.
- Maintains compliance with all Orlando Health policies and procedures.

- Acts as a role model and resource person for staff.
- Participates in review and revision of policies and procedures.
- Demonstrates compliance with standards of regulatory and accrediting agencies.
- Establishes relationships with professionals of other health-related groups within the community.
- Demonstrates effective verbal and written communication with diverse populations, including physicians, employees, patients, and families.
Qualifications
Education/Training
Graduate of accredited physician assistant program.
Licensure/Certification
- Maintain current physician assistant licensure in State of Florida.
- Maintain current BLS/healthcare certifications
